Name: Brewster Ladies' Library Discovery & Enrichment Series: Wing Island: History Revealed Through Archaeology
Date: September 18, 2024
Time: 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM EDT
Event Description:
Ever since the end of the last ice age 11,900 years ago, Cape Cod has been shaped by the forces of nature. The coastline of Brewster and its only island provide an excellent example. The archaeology project on Wing Island has revealed the presence of the Wampanoag tribe on the island. Archaeologist Dr. Frederick Dunford will explain why the Wampanoags left and the importance of the island to the English colonists and their descendants. Dr. Dunford was the museum archaeologist at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster from 1982 through 2003. He has a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from Harvard and a master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Massachusetts. He is the horticulture specialist in the English village at the Plimoth Patuxet Museums.
