Event Description:
Most of the Cape's birds move southward from July to November where they will find more food and a warmer climate. This program will present what Fall migrants look like, and how Winter migrants appear along with year-rounders. Once breeding season is over, a male’s spectacular display of springtime plumage reverts to their alternate plumage and changes back to the basic look. It is taxing to produce showy feathers, and bright colors attract predators and unwanted rivals. This is why migratory species like Scarlet Tanagers, Indigo Buntings, and some shorebirds and warblers look different when they’re traveling south versus north.
Phil's mission has always been to inform people about the awesome wonder of the natural world. Since he retired in 2012 he has written a column on Birding for the Cape Cod Times Newspaper, presented for Libraries, Garden Clubs and Schools. Phil had also taught Biology and Anatomy/Physiology at the High School level, worked as a naturalist on Whale-watching boats for three summers, worked as the Head Naturalist at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History and Green Briar Nature Center; He was DIrector of Education, South Shore Natural Science Center; he has been an Interpretive Park Ranger for the Cape Cod National Seashore and has actively birded for over 40 years. He was a Bio Major and graduated from Cornell University. He now works summers on the Barnstable Harbor Ecotour pontoon boat as head naturalist and volunteers as a docent at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History winters.
