Name: Cape Cod Museum of Natural History presents Digging Into the Past Highland Lighthouse with John Small
Date: August 21, 2019
Time: 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM EDT
Event Description:
Highland Lighthouse in North Truro, Massachusetts is the first lighthouse on Cape Cod and began operating in 1797. John Small’s family ancestors arrived in the Truro/Eastham area of Cape Cod around 1700, before the towns of Truro and Provincetown were incorporated, back when the area was known as Pamet. He is the great-great-great grandson of Isaac Small the first lighthouse keeper of Highland Light.

John’s presentation will focus primarily on members of the Small family who spent time at Highland Light as its keepers. Much of that information was gleaned from the writings of his cousin, author Isaac Morton Small who wrote extensively about shipwrecks off the coast of Highland Light and remembers when Henry David Thoreau visited his parents, James and Jerusha Small in Truro. Highland Lighthouse has remained a beacon since 1797, warning weary sea travelers of the dangers off the coast of Cape Cod.

John Small is an artist/illustrator living on Cape Cod and is currently working on a children's book, The Adventures of Thomas, the Lighthouse Mouse
