Stellwagen Bank (NOAA) has just informed us of a change in time on Sanctuary Live: Expedition to the Wreck of the Steamship Portland, Tuesday, September 17th. It was originally scheduled for 12:30pm on Tuesday and has now been changed to a Facebook LIVE event at 2pm.
The Cape Cod Museum of Natural will be broadcasting the Facebook LIVE event in our auditorium Tuesday, September 17th at 2pm.
Researchers from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary will be broadcasting live to the public as they document the wreck of the paddle wheel Steamship Portland often labeled "the Titanic of New England."
Scientists will be aboard the Research Vessel Connecticut using state-of-the-art imaging technology, including 360-degree cameras used for virtual reality filming, linking through the University of Rhode Island’s Inner Space Center.
The Portland was sunk during a storm in 1898 off the coast of Cape Ann, and is currently within the federally-protected waters of Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. In 2005, the Portland was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Join us at the Museum for this exciting and rare presentation to the public that will cover biology, underwater technology, and maritime archaeology.
