Brewster Ladies' Library: Learn About Lasagna Gardening with Master Gardener Kate Eldred
Lasagna Gardening is a no-till, reconstructive, all-natural way to create a garden area where there was only brush, gravel, rocks, or other inhospitable terrain. It can be adapted to any size plot, hillside, sun aspect, or use. It is accomplished by layering (like the layers in a lasagna) a variety of organic materials, like dried leaves, grass clippings, animal manure, compost, or shredded paper on top of a layer of cardboard. This turns into a nutritious organic mix that both kills the underlying weeds and provides a planting layer that can be used for grass, vegetables, perennials, or shrubs.
Kate Eldred is a member of the Master Gardener Association of Cape Cod. Their mission is to supplement the reach of the Cape Cod Extension Service by providing research-based solutions and information to the community. Kate spent her working life as a bridge between science and the public, and in retirement is working with citizens to save our environment, one garden and lawn at a time.
