Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author Geraldine Brooks To Speak in Brewster September 16
Nickerson Memorial Lecture Sponsored by Brewster Ladies’ Library Association
 
BREWSTER, MA, August 3, 2023— The Brewster Ladies’  Library Association has announced that acclaimed author and journalist Geraldine Brooks will be the featured speaker for the Frances Mapes Nickerson Memorial Lecture, set for September 16, 2023 at the Brewster Baptist Church, 7:30 PM with a book signing to follow the lecture.
 
Geraldine Brooks is known for her immersive, character-driven historical novels. Her most recent novel, Horse (published in 2022), is a current New York Times bestseller.  Her fiction debut, Year of Wonders: A Novel of the Plague, was published in ten countries.  Her second novel, March, was awarded the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and her third book, People of the Book, became an instant New York Times bestseller. Her fourth book, Calebs Crossing, was the winner of the New England Book Award for Fiction.  The Secret Chord, a novel about the life of King David, was released in 2015, also to critical acclaim.
 
Australian-born Geraldine Brooks moved to the United States to attend the journalism masters program at Columbia University in New York City. She then spent 11 years as correspondent at The Wall Street Journal, where she covered some of the worlds most troubled areas, including Bosnia, Somalia, and the Middle East.
 
 
Geraldine Brooks is also the author of two works of nonfiction:  Nine Parts of Desire: The Hidden World of Islamic Women, and Foreign Correspondence: A Penpals Journey from Down Under to All Over.  She was a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies at Harvard University in fall 2005 and was the recipient of the 2010 Dayton Literary Peace Prize for Lifetime Achievement.
 
The annual Nickerson event is sponsored by the Brewster Ladies’  Library Association in memory and honor of Frances Mapes Nickerson, a long-time Brewster resident and library benefactor.
 
Members who join the Association before August 1st for the membership period July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024 will be eligible for early member registration for two (2) tickets per household starting August 8.  Registration for the general public will begin August 22 at www.brewsterladieslibrary.org.
