Brewster Ladies' Library Association Discovery & Enrichment Series: A Short History of Cape Cod and its Role in the American Revolution
Enjoy a quick review of Cape Cod history by Professor Bob Allison for context around the present day. He will focus on the role Cape Codders played in the American Revolution. With less than 14,000 residents, fewer than were living in Boston, Cape Cod was a microcosm of the colonies. Torn by allegiance to King George and their quest for freedom, Cape Codders defined a path that helped establish our nation. Allison is a professor of history at Suffolk University in Boston. He also chairs Revolution 250, a consortium of organizations planning American Revolutionary commemorations in Massachusetts, and hosts its weekly podcast featuring conversations on the Revolution with historians and interpreters. He is President of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts, a scholarly organization focused on early American history, and a life-trustee of the USS Constitution Museum. His books include The American Revolution: A Very Short Introduction, A Short History of Boston, and A Short History of Cape Cod, as well as a biography of American Naval hero Stephen Decatur. For The Great Courses, he has prepared two lecture series: “Before 1776: Life in Colonial America,” and “The Age of Benjamin Franklin.” Although he and his wife live in Boston, they spend as much time as possible in the Provincetown house where his mother-in-law was born in 1931, and which her family has owned since 1906.
