Organ recovery for transplantation from a deceased patient has shifted the scientific focus on determining death to brain function, specifically the ability to maintain consciousness and breathe independently. The permanent absence of blood circulation to the brain allows for the declaration of death. However, this standard medical practice is facing challenges from certain conflicted religious groups. Dr. Francis Delmonico, Emeritus Director of Renal Transplantation at the Massachusetts General Hospital, will discuss the controversy and offer a scientific and ethical resolution.
