This program will also be available virtually with registration. \n\n\n\n Cape Cod National Seashore is not just a mighty and wondrous strand of glacial sand. It holds within its 43\,000 acres an astounding collection of Native American habitation sites\, shipwrecks\, farmsteads\, small cemeteries\, tourist and industrial sites and military installations. Her archeological resources have been tapped unevenly and sporadically beginning in the 19th Century with more organized investigations beginning in the 1950s. After the creation of the Seashore in 1961\, the National Parks Service began to systematically identify places like the Great Island Tavern site\, followed by the ambitious McManamon survey of 1979-84 and the dramatic storm-exposed Carns Site of 1990. Most recently\, the University of MA Boston took a second look at the famed tavern site\, employing new technology and approaches indicative of the need to rapidly document fast-eroding sites as nature continues its reworking of our beloved glacial strand. Join Bill as he discusses this tale of discovery and the challenges ahead of documenting what's left and presenting to the public the most accurate story of life on early Cape Cod. \n\n\n\n Bill Burke serves as Historian for the National Seashore. Bill holds a BA in History summa cum laude from Providence College and a MA in Colonial American History and Historical Archeology from The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg\, VA. He has worked at several National Parks from MA to VA.
