SUMMARY:Cape Cod Museum of Natural History presents Digging Into the Past Retracing a 19th Century Survey along the Outer Cape Shore with Steve Mague
DESCRIPTION:Between 1887 and 1888\, Henry L. Marindin\, Assistant Topographer of the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey\, conducted a detailed survey of the outer shores of Cape Cod from Chatham to Provincetown\, providing an important base line for future comparisons. In 2007\, under the direction of Graham Giese\, the Land-Sea Interaction Program of the Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown\, began a project to resurvey Marindin's profiles and cross-sections to quantify changes to landforms and the nearshore environment that have occurred over the past century. This paper focuses on the recovery and occupation of Marindin's benchmarks and to estimate future shoreline conditions in the context of climate change and sea level rise.\n\n \n\nSteve Mague\, MS\, is an Adjunct Scientist at the Center for Coastal Studies focusing on the use of historical cartography to characterize and quantify changes in coastal landforms.\n\n. \n\n For more information please call the Museum at 508-896-3867 ext. 133.
