Flaco\, the Eurasian Eagle-Owl who escaped from Central Park Zoo and took up residence amidst bustling Manhattan\, captured imaginations around the world. David Gessner's book explores the battle of ethics provoked by Flaco's escape and confronts the broader implications of the fatal dangers Flaco faced in a polluted and populous urban ecosystem. A native of Worcester\, MA\, Gessner spent his childhood summers in an East Dennis cottage\, and cultivated his love of the natural world right here on Cape Cod. Gessner's previous work has been published in the New York Times Magazine\, Outside\, and Orion\, and he is the founder of the literary magazine Ecotone. He is a professor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington\, and the author of thirteen books that blend a love of nature\, humor\, memoir\, and environmentalism\, including The Return of the Osprey\, The Prophet of Dry Hill\, Leave It As It Is: A Journey Through Theodore Roosevelt's American Wilderness\, and Quiet Desperation\, Savage Delight: Sheltering with Thoreau in the Age of Crisis. *The Book of Flaco is available for purchase in the Museum's Science Shop.
